Advanced Standing for Admission in 2017-18

Like other universities, HKU has Advanced Standing arrangements for students admitted with particular academic backgrounds.  Advanced Standing gives you credit for the work you have undertaken in high school, community college, university or other educational institution as appropriate, and may enable you to shorten your study period.  For students who have completed seven years of secondary education at the time of enrolling at the University, the Advanced Standing arrangements for each degree programme are listed below:

Bachelor of Science in Surveying Applicants with GCE A-Level or IB Diploma qualifications and at least seven years of secondary education at the time of being admitted to the University will be granted 48 credits of Advanced Standing. These are made up of 6 credits of unspecified electives, 24 UG5 credits (Chinese, Core University English, and 12 credits of the Common Core provided that students take one Common Core course in each Area of Inquiry), and 18 credits of Faculty Foundation Courses. Advanced Standing will be granted automatically and separate application is not required.  You will be contacted by the Faculty Office should Advanced Standing be granted.  Please submit a school report/letter/graduation certificate from your school to indicate your successful completion of seven years of secondary education by May 31, 2017. claren@hku.hk
Bachelor of Arts in Landscape Studies Applicants with GCE A-Level or IB Diploma qualifications and at least seven years of secondary education at the time of being admitted to the University will be granted 30 credits of Advanced Standing. These are made up of 6 credits of unspecified electives and 24 UG5 credits (Chinese, Core University English, and 12 credits of the Common Core provided that students take one Common Core course in each Area of Inquiry). These are made up of 30 credits of unspecified electives, and 18 UG5 credits (Core University English, and 12 credits of the Common Core provided that students take one Common Core course in each Area of Inquiry). In addition, students will be exempted from taking the Chinese Language Enhancement requirement, but will have to replace this 6 credits with another unspecified elective. As a result, a total 192 credits, taken at The University of Hong Kong, are required for graduation. These are made up of 24 credits of unspecified electives, and 24 UG5 credits (Chinese, Core University English, and 12 credits of the Common Core provided that students take one Common Core course in each Area of Inquiry).

Students who would like to pursue additional major(s) or minor(s) will have to complete courses as required by the offering departments of the respective major(s) or minor(s). As the total number of credits to be taken during the whole course of study shall not exceed 288 credits under the 4-year curriculum, students may be required to give up certain number of Advanced Standing credits under the category of unspecified electives to fulfil the major or minor requirements as prescribed by the Regulations and Syllabuses of the relevant programmes.

These are made up of 24 credits of unspecified electives, and 24 UG5 credits (Chinese, Core University English, and 12 credits of the Common Core provided that students take one Common Core course in each Area of Inquiry).

BBA(IBGM) students are required to pursue a second major. As the total number of credits to be taken during the whole course of study shall not exceed 288 credits under the 4-year curriculum, students may be required to give up certain number of Advanced Standing credits under the category of unspecified electives to fulfil the major or minor requirements as prescribed by the Regulations and Syllabuses of the relevant programmes.

Bachelor of Dental Surgery Applicants who have completed a seven-year curriculum of secondary education with GCE A-Level or IB Diploma qualifications at the time of being admitted to the University are eligible to apply for and be granted up to 18 credits of advanced standing. These are made up of 12 credits of the Common Core (CC) provided that applicants take one Common Core course in each Area of Inquiry for the remaining CC Courses to be taken, and of 6 credits of Core University English (CUE) for applicants who are able to fulfil the exemption criteria for CUE. These are made up of 6 credits for Core University English course and 12 credits of the Common Core courses provided that students take one Common Core course in each Area of Inquiry.

Applicants with degree or above qualifications at the time of being admitted to the University will be considered for Advanced Standing on a case-by-case basis, subject to the provision of final official transcripts by July 20, 2017.

To be eligible for Advanced Standing, you are required to submit a school report or relevant document certified by your school to indicate your successful completion of seven years of secondary education in the academic year 2016-17 together with the IB or A-Level results by July 20 or August 23, 2017 respectively.  Should you fail to submit the document by the stipulated deadline, the offer of Advanced Standing will be withdrawn accordingly.

The UCAS tariff point conversion for GCE A-Level grades is as follows:
A* = 56 / A = 48 / B = 40 / C = 32 / D = 24 / E = 16

The Advanced Standing arrangements described herewith may also apply to students with seven years of secondary education and not only limited to students with GCE A-Level and IB Diploma qualifications.  Please consult the respective Faculty for details.
